The Blue Jays and Mets start a weekend series with the Mets starting to round into form after a three game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies during the week.

New York will send out Justin Verlander, who is still inconsistent after starting the first few weeks on the injured list with a shoulder injury. He'll face a vaunted Blue Jays lineup, but the Mets will look to match Toronto against former Mets starter Chris Bassitt.

Bassitt is off his worst start of the season, can he respond against a Mets team starting to look like many had hopes ahead of the season.

Here are the odds for Friday's matchup:

Blue Jays vs. Mets prediction and odds

Bassitt has a run of three straight shutout starts, but he has some underlying regression that showed in his last start against the Twins, allowing seven earned runs in four innings while allowing nine hits and two home runs.

The Mets offense is starting to come alive, top 10 in both batting average (ninth) and OPS (seventh) over the last 15 days and will face Bassitt, who is struggling to strike batters out this season, less than eight punch outs per nine innings, his lowest mark since 2018. In turn, his walk rate has also climbed to a near-career high of nearly four per nine, and the Mets are a disciplined unit that doesn't strike out a ton and walks a lot. New York is seventh in drawing walks and strikes out at the third lowest rate in baseball.

However, Verlander has similar concerns to Bassitt, striking out about six batters per nine innings, the lowest mark of his career darting back to 2006. With an inability to blow pitchers by batters, Verlander has left himself open to harder contact this season, and he is allowing a near-12% home run rate.

The Blue Jays are a top five lineup in terms of OPS and are more than capable of hitting Verlander, who still hasn't showcased his best stuff just yet.

I'm avoiding the side and backing the over in what could turn out to be a high scoring affair despite the billing of two elite pitchers.
