And the award for the worst critique of the NY Mets this week goes to...

In all honesty, most people can understand both sides of the argument. Fans are frustrated. Maybe a line was crossed by making it more about Pete Alonso than the New York Mets. If you were someone who was at Citi Field chanting to fire David Stearns, there must have been some sense of awkwardness in your spine about cheering for the other uniform.

Fans should always be entitled to their opinion, right or wrong. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a worst take to have.

In comes Stephen A. Smith. Known for his hot takes, he shared the worst one of all on his show First Take.

Of all the people who should be running the Mets, Chris Christie isn’t one of them

Politics have nothing to do with it. Christie joined the Mets’ Board of Directors in 2021. It’s about the most political position there probably is within the organization. What they do, what power they wield, and their responsibilities is just a guess.

Even if Christie “knows baseball,” the suggestion that he could run the team better than anyone else is laughable yet exactly the kind of opinion we’ve come to expect from the mouth of Smith.

Not particularly known for being well-versed with baseball, it’s never a shock to see Smith get something wrong with his MLB takes. This is more of him shouting out a friend with some ridiculousness. The question is: does he actually think the Mets would benefit from listening to the former Governor of New Jersey?

Smith has at least stayed consistent when it comes to Alonso. When he departed for the Orioles, he was critical of them.

It does seem like there is a major divide between a percentage of Mets fans. There are those who project themselves as thinkers who’ll defend Stearns needlessly. There are those, Smith, Joe Benigno, etc. who get angry for the sake of being angry and couldn’t tell you the names of more than a handful of the relievers from that year’s team while insisting they watch every game.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reported the Mets will begin a search for a new general manager this winter. The next presidential election isn’t until 2028. Christie as GM in 2027 leading to a Mets World Series is one way to win votes. Don’t let Stearns bump his head and make it happen.
