The New York Mets handled the 2026 MLB Draft with some early risks, snatching up pitchers with injury history while also snagging an originally projected top 30 pick, Aidan Robbins, in the third-round. However you felt about what they did, a move on Monday was unquestionably a good one.
Among all of the players who went undrafted, no one stood out more than Dylan Carey. He won the Brooks Wallace Award, given out to the best college shortstop. He hit .353 this past season and as unreasonable as many college stats tend to translate into the pros, this is an odd one. The Mets have agreed to sign him as an undrafted free agent.
Getting named the best at his position and then going overlooked by all 30 teams should have us avoid rolling out the red carpet for him. Nonetheless, with the signing, all the Mets did was assure us they’re not complete fools, still have some sway, and aren’t completely oblivious to doing the obvious.
It's a win for the Mets to sign Dylan Carey after everyone skipped him in the MLB Draft
Not even a top 250 prospect in the draft, there wasn’t any kind of expectation the Mets or anyone else would actually take Carey with one of their earlier picks. It’s the fact no one took a flier at all, even to make him Mr. Irrelevant, that’s puzzling.
But hey, who are we to complain? The Mets, by signing him rather than drafting him, will add Carey into a system that isn’t a stranger to undrafted free agents.
Most notably, Chris Suero was signed by the Mets in March of 2022. While this season hasn’t gone amazingly well for him in Double-A, hitting .202 with 12 home runs and 24 stolen bases working as a catcher, first baseman, and left fielder, he has been one of their top 30 prospects for the last two seasons. His bad year has still contained power, speed, and a .354 OBP.
The MLB Draft tends to be the biggest crapshoot of all of the major sports with misses galore and hits no one saw coming. The assessment of Carey over on Reddit explains his draft stock was non-existent because of his age, a grizzled 22, and lack of incredible tools. As one user put it, his inability to go back to college because he was in his final year made it so teams would rather take someone they could sign and bid for his services after.
It all seems kind of silly, but understandable. Carey turns 23 on July 26th. Carson Benge turned 23 in January.
Whether it works or not, this is one of those moves that deserves applause even if it wasn’t brilliant or unique, just the right thing to do.
