Who's pitching for the NY Mets today? Meet Robert Stock, a fascinating 36-year-old

Who’s taking the mound for the New York Mets on August 2? Why, it’s none other than Robert Stock. Yes, the world’s most fascinating 36-year-old journeyman pitcher.

Never heard of him? Maybe the name rings a bell from two relief appearances in 2021 with the Mets. Nearly 500 minor league innings plus another 370 in foreign leagues, Stock is no random promotion. He’s a baseball nerd with a sense of humor and a future in the front office.

Stock created a website, Stockyard Baseball, to gather data on pitchers and hitters. An ambitious undertaking, Stock’s career on the field is just as interesting.

Shoulder discomfort in the WBC landed Stock on the IL back in March and he was quickly forgotten about as a useful depth piece for the Mets. His 14 innings in Brooklyn went well. More recently, he made a pair of starts in Triple-A Syracuse that resulted in 7.2 innings of work and a 2.35 ERA. A small sample, Stock’s most outstanding season came in 2024-2025 in Mexico.

In the Mexican Independent League, Stock 9-4 with a 3.38 ERA. He followed it with an even more amazing Winter League showing. At 10-2 with a 1.60 ERA, he landed on the radar of the Boston Red Sox who gave him a minor league deal. He pitched well in Triple-A, but unfortunately, walks were too common in his 2.2 innings. He issued 4 walks and allowed another 3 earned runs to spoil the promising 3.92 ERA he amassed in 85 Triple-A frames.

Turning 37 this November, Stock is pitching for the enjoyment of the game with maybe some glory mixed in there, too. He won’t get much of the latter with the 2026 Mets as his start on Sunday is more about filling in for a team avoiding the usage of their two starting pitchers on the block.

Many fans will turn on the television to see Stock take the mound against the Miami Marlins and make a comment about how downhill the season has gone. True in some ways, at least they’re giving us a nice little story. Who doesn’t want August 2, 2026, to be remembered as The Robert Stock Game rather than a remembrance of who the Mets traded or are about to?
