Chipper Jones should know better. A generation’s most dastardly New York Mets villain wasn’t in the June 30, 2000, game when the Mets scored 10 runs in the 8th inning to defeat the Atlanta Braves 11-8. A game started by Bobby Bonilla at third base, Jones had a view from the dugout of one of the greatest baseball collapses in a single night one could script.
Jones is one of those sports villains you have to respect. The Hall of Famer named his child after Shea Stadium because of all of his success there. So when he has a faux pas, we have to point it out.
On Thursday, the Braves were up big. At one point leading 9-3, Jones tweeted about what a good day it was.
Today is a good day…..9-3 good guys!

The Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks would later exchange runs in the 8th, but with a comfortable 10-4 lead, no one thought much of Jones’ comment until every last hanging chad was counted.
The Braves had an epic 9th inning meltdown to push them 7 games under .500
This might be the Braves’ rock bottom. The Diamondbacks scored 7 runs in the 9th inning and took this game 11-10. The Arizona victory pushed them back to .500 at 31-31. For the Braves, it dropped them an unlucky 7 below the even mark.
Appropriately named Scott Blewett gave up 3 home runs before the Braves summoned Raisel Iglesias from the bullpen. He’d allow 3 runs vs. Blewett’s 5. All were earned. Iglesias’ ERA is up to 6.75 on the season for those looking for another reason to feel like the Braves aren’t even close to contending.
Desperate, the Braves have called up Craig Kimbrel. The 37-year-old pitched to a 5.33 ERA in 52.1 innings for the Baltimore Orioles last season. It’ll be the first time since 2014 when he pitched for the Braves.
June has haunted the Mets plenty in the past. So far, we’ve seen them go into Los Angeles and take the season series from the mighty Dodgers thus earning themselves the tie-breaker in the event both clubs finish with the same amount of wins. It’s important for seeding as Citi Field has been a sanctuary of success for the ball club all year.
Anytime the Braves lose, it’s good news for Mets fans. Doing it in such embarrassing fashion with Larry Wayne involved makes it even sweeter.
