July is about a couple of things. Independence Day. Fireworks. BBQ. Calling the police on your noisy neighbors. It’s also MLB trade deadline season. A literal day some of us weirdos (raises hand) save up a vacation day from work to follow, the MLB trade deadline which usually falls on July 31 will be a chaotic one yet again for the New York Mets. They have championship aspirations and some holes on the roster to improve upon.
What if the Mets were able to reverse some trades? If so, they might set themselves up well by hitting the rewind button on these four deals.
1) Pete Crow-Armstrong to the Cubs
This is the obvious one to get out of the way. If the Mets never trade Pete Crow-Armstrong away, one of their biggest deadline and organizational needs would be met for probably a good half-decade at least. The Crow-Armstrong trade in the summer of 2021 was at worst questionable. By 2022, fans were ready to pounce because the club’s 2020 first-round pick had taken full flight. He went from a highly-ranked prospect to one of the best in the game.
Distracted by what Jarred Kelenic could become at the time, it turns out that this was the far greater misfire on behalf of the Mets. Crow-Armstrong is pushing for an MVP this season. He has developed beyond just a Gold Glove center fielder. Now one of the best-rounded players in the game while playing a premium position, reverse this trade and the Mets are a completely different team.
How badly the Mets need a center fielder at this year’s trade deadline is up for debate. Rumors of their desire to add at the position have leaked and it’s not a surprise. They won’t be getting a player of Crow-Armstrong’s ability. If only we kept the receipt on Javier Baez and Trevor Williams.
Crow-Armstrong’s talent and popularity helped award him a starting spot for the National League in this year’s All-Star Game.
