The MLB trade deadline is a good game of “who’s that guy?” You can study up on other farm systems for months and still there will be guys added to your team you didn’t have on your radar. The New York Mets, linked with the Chicago White Sox for multiple trades, ended up sending Huascar Brazoban over there for a pair of pitching prospects. The headliner, Gabe Davis, already has some fans losing their mind with delight.
His ranking is irrelevant within the Mets system and bound to swing in a major way. A fifth round pick from only 2025, the expectation shouldn’t be high. Don’t tell that to Mets fans hoping the Mets robbed the White Sox.
Some similarities in the scouting report for Davis and Jacob Misiorowski had at least one fan trying to convince themselves the Mets just added a future Cy Young contender. Even citing height, the 6’9 Davis is a monster of a man but is he actually the next budding ace?

Other fans were quick to dismiss the comparison, one referencing Davis’ need for a larger arsenal of pitches that work at a high level to match The Miz. A sensible take, it immediately explains why Davis was available in the first place. So does his horrifying 8.31 ERA in Double-A this season.
When the Mets scouts looked at Davis, they saw something his Baseball-Reference Page doesn’t tell us. At 22-years-old and in his first professional season, a rocky start was to be expected. After all, Misiorowski started off with a 5.57 ERA in his first 21 innings in Double-A. Davis has been far worse, but as Misiorowski has shown, there are always going to be bumps along the road to stardom.
Right now regarded as one of the league’s best pitchers, Misiorowski was only a 4.36 ERA pitcher as a rookie in 2025. Now at an insane 1.63 ERA, it took him a short period of time to yield the results the Milwaukee Brewers fans were promised.
A one-pitch difference won’t determine if Davis is actually a major league stud or not. Keeping the ball in the yard is the first order of business. His 11 home runs in 10 starts spanning 34.2 innings has done the most damage to his Double-A numbers this year.
Fifth round picks tend to have a major hill to climb with the Mets being especially lucky in that round, drafting Christian Scott in 2021 and Zac Thornton in 2023. In Mets history, they already ranked as top 5 fifth round Mets draft picks the team was able to sign.
