Phillies should be the least happy to see Tyler Rogers traded to the NY Mets

You don’t necessarily acquire a player with the expectation that they’ll be all that relevant against a particular team or group of players. However, this might have been something David Stearns had in mind when he picked up Tyler Rogers from the San Francisco Giants. Even though the Philadelphia Phillies added to their own bullpen with a huge splash of Jhoan Duran, it won't do some of their hitters any good.

Last October saw the Mets and Philadelphia Phillies meet in the NLDS for their first ever postseason matchup. The Mets came away victorious, but that doesn’t guarantee the same result if the pair of NL East foes meet up again. It’s important to have some leverage. Rogers gives them exactly that.

Thanks to Jayson Stark, we know exactly where Rogers could fit in and how Phillies manager Rob Thomson may need to adjust his lineups. Rogers has dominated several of their key hitters.

The Mets know just how to use Tyler Rogers against the Phillies

Holding Trea Turner, J.T. Realmuto, and Nick Castellanos to such pedestrian numbers without an extra-base hit is impressive. Although the sample isn’t so large, accomplishing this versus three different All-Star caliber players is huge. One could even claim the latter two aren’t at their best any longer, furthering the case that Rogers should have leverage.

Because of his funky delivery, Rogers is one of the more deceptive pitchers in the league. He’s someone you’d need to see a few times to really get a good grasp of. All of his career has been spent in San Francisco, limiting the opportunities those three have had. Only Turner’s brief time in Los Angeles gave him some extra plate appearances.

Turner is 1 for 12 with 3 strikeouts, Realmuto is 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts, and Castellanos is 2 for 9 with 2 strikeouts. Kyle Schwarber is the only current Phillies player with an extra-base hit, a home run, against Rogers.

Nothing is guaranteed to continue. Just Google “asteroid” and click on “news” to keep yourself up at night and realize how unimportant a lot of things truly are, especially past splits. Nevertheless, Phillies fans should be concerned at this game of chess David Stearns could be playing. Now if we could just get someone to handle the Los Angeles Dodgers. They’re batting .240/.266/.387 against Rogers. Maybe they should be a little fearful, too.
