Baseball isn’t a sport where coaches or executives tend to start a brand new life in a new city. They take what or who they know with them. The trifecta of David Stearns, Andy Green, and Derek Falvey is one of the leading three-headed monsters who’ll have decision-making power for the New York Mets this winter.

Stearns calls the shows. Green can offer some input but has to deal with what he’s handed. Falvey gets to advise.

Whenever these sorts of changes happen, we all want to rush to find a connection. Stearns has regularly added players he knew from the Milwaukee Brewers. Falvey is sure to offer some tips on which players from the Minnesota Twins could be of use to the Mets. What about a guy who has crossed paths with all three and was already a trade target last offseason?

Prepare for more Trevor Megill to the Mets trade rumors

The name Trevor Megill sparks a memory for Mets fans as the older brother of Tylor Megill. Far different careers, the former Megill currently with the Brewers, continues to be one of those late-blooming bullpen success stories while his brother has sat out all of 2026 due to recovery from Tommy John surgery. Injury aside, the Mets’ Megill has been a fringe major league starter many have been begging to see land in the bullpen.

Sticking with the non-Mets Megill, there’s enough reason to believe he could end up as a target once again this winter. Megill goes into his final year of arbitration eligibility in 2027. That means his salary goes up and the Brewers will have a desire to capitalize on a trade.

Megill’s connection with the Mets front office and coaching staff is unique. A member of the San Diego Padres organization briefly, his crossing of paths with Green came as members of the 2021 Chicago Cubs. Green was the bench coach. Megill was a rookie pitcher. The very next season, Megill landed on the Twins for a year. He then joined the Brewers who, while no longer led by Stearns, kept him on as an advisor.

Trading for a player in his final year of control ahead of the 2027 season comes with the added risk due to the lack of knowledge about how many games will be missed due to the CBA negotiations. Megill, in his second straight year of 30 saves and an under 3.00 ERA, looks very much the part of a high-leverage arm the Mets could need in their bullpen. Their Devin Williams insurance was traded away when they dealt Luke Weaver. Kodai Senga has shown enough cracks for us to be more bearish than bullish on what he can offer moving forward.
