Some way too early, way too gloomy New York Mets rumors were dropped on Friday Bruce Levine in Chicago saying the Chicago Cubs have interest in Freddy Peralta. Who wouldn’t? Later back-tracking by basically saying it was more theoretical and not an actual rumor, it shouldn’t stop us from wondering about the possibility of the Mets and Cubs making a swap.
When it comes to Mets-Cubs trades, there isn’t any more referenced than Javier Baez and Trevor Williams for Pete Crow-Armstrong. The Mets get dragged through the mud for the trade a bit unfairly at times. Baez was really good for the Mets and so was Williams in his hybrid role. It was more a miscalculation in what PCA could become. Even so, he remains a work in progress with an overall game that can lack at times.
The trade history with the Mets and Cubs won’t stop a potential deal later this summer if it did indeed become a more realistic possibility. If so, we should keep our eyes on these Cubs prospects as headliners.
Three Cubs prospects who could make sense for the Mets as headliners in a Freddy Peralta trade
1) Jonathon Long - the best ranked
Ranked 6th in the Cubs system by MLB Pipeline, Jonathon Long is a right-handed hitting first baseman with some good power. He hit 20 home runs and drove in 91 while hitting a tad over .300 last year in Triple-A. He’s off to another strong start this year. As a first baseman with only mild experience at other positions since going pro, the Mets would probably want a good complimentary piece to go with him as he lacks the versatility David Stearns and every GM should desire.
2) Pedro Ramirez - the best fit
Not far behind Long is one of those more versatile players. Ranked 8th by MLB Pipeline is Pedro Ramirez. The 22-year-old infielder is in Triple-A and has spent most of his career spreading his time across second base and third base evenly. A lighter hitter who has never reached 10 home runs in a season since debuting in 2021, his speed had him setting a career-high with 28 stolen bases last year. What he lacks in power he makes up in other areas. When the Peralta rumors dropped, he was batting .299 in his first 34 Triple-A games. He puts the bat on the ball and finds ways to reach base with a .362 OBP in the minors.
3) James Triantos - the best get back what we lost
One spot below Ramirez at number 9 is James Triantos. Versatile as well, he is finding his starts most frequently at second base. He has also played some third base this year and has a little center field experience. A top 100 prospect in the past, he doesn’t have much power either but has big speed. He stole 45 bases in his first 156 games in Triple-A. Coming with it is a .271 batting average. A bit stuck right now and already on the Cubs’ 40-man roster, he’d have the least appeal to the Mets, but the similarities to Jett Williams in some ways would make him an intriguing option considering New York sold him to acquire Peralta in the first place.
