Huascar Brazoban - First Grade A, New Grade A
Nothing changes here. The last Mets trade deadline move handed them Huascar Brazoban from the Miami Marlins. It was another smart move because of Brazoban’s big league success and available minor league options.
By the end of the 2024 season, this wasn’t looking like an A. Fair or not, the deal was trending toward becoming something closer to a C. Brazoban had a 5.14 ERA and nearly as many walks as he had strikeouts. Was this a rare Marlins trade win against their NL East rivals?
Brazoban’s rise in 2025 has kept this an A grade. Making it look better is how poorly the prospect the Mets gave up for him has performed.
Wilfredo Lara is batting .201/.298/.317 with 1 home run through 192 plate appearances this season. After hitting well in High-A last year, Lara is experiencing a strange regression at the plate. No worries. He’s Miami’s problem.
Not quite a full A+ trade, we can only get there if Brazoban sustains this success and Lara burns out before ever reaching the majors. The Mets seemed hopeful Zuber could have followed a similar trajectory as Brazoban with a year to get things right. The Brazoban trade isn’t the best trade deadline deal they’ve ever made, but it’s definitely up there as one of the more rewarding. He was not a high-profile trade candidate.
