Ryne Stanek - First Grade B+, New Grade A-

Ryne Stanek had the exact opposite results as Maton with the Mets. He was pretty bad in the regular season. The playoffs is where he cranked things up to a new level.

He had a 4.38 ERA with the Seattle Mariners and saw it balloon to 6.06 with the Mets. He came up big for the Mets in the first two rounds of the playoffs, and would even earn a victory in Game 5 versus the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS.

This trade gets much more complicated than Maton. The Mets gave up Rhylan Thomas, a good contact hitter in the minor leagues. A handful of at-bats for the Mariners this year hasn’t resulted in much success. However, in Triple-A he is batting over .300 with a few more walks than strikeouts.

Thomas is an old-school style player who would need to have Luis Arraez levels of success to be a truly impactful player. It was a worthwhile move for the Mets to make with little risk of Thomas ever exploding as a future star.

In retrospect, this trade improves slightly. Stanek was far too good in the playoffs for the Mets to not like it. The strong October showing is likely what led to another contract offer from the Mets. How you feel about him in 2025 is a different story.
