A NY Mets trade deadline move that makes them look like winners of the whole dang thing

Sell. Sell. Sell. Anything not strapped down for 2027 needs to go. It’s clear what mission numero uno for the New York Mets is before August 3. However, as many continue to suggest, there’s always a chance the Mets do a little buying.

How rare is this? In 2017, right around the time all of the veterans on expiring contracts were going, the Mets acquired AJ Ramos from the Miami Marlins. It didn’t work out, but it was no doubt a worthwhile move.

Currently not in the market to buy anyone’s closer because they’re paying someone already for that gig, the suggestion from many seems to have them navigating around a potential trade for one of the Los Angeles Angels starting pitchers. Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano are controllable, talented, and very much what the Mets need. ESPN covered a few tasks for the Mets to accomplish at the trade deadline. Among them was the acquisition of one of those players or even someone else.

Detmers and Soriano are going to cost a lot. A good guess is the Angels would want Francisco Alvarez. It’s not so preposterous with the Mets’ tendency to prefer Luis Torrens behind the plate. Mixed signals about whether they will move him or not, player usage makes it appear as if they would.

I’d still have my doubts about the Mets making this kind of trade in the coming days. It seems bold and limiting. As desirable as catchers will be at this year’s trade deadline, a pair of sellers making such a big blockbuster feels too strange. This is not Ramos for some prospects like it was in 2017.

Other names listed by ESPN include Seattle Mariners starters Emerson Hancock and Luis Castillo. The latter is very much available, but that’s kind of like trading for Freddy Peralta all over again. Castillo wouldn’t cost a lot and the M’s would undoubtedly eat some of the salary. The question is what does Seattle get in return to make it worth matching up with the Mets?

Joe Ryan also got a mention, but the Minnesota Twins are buying. Several New York Yankees starters pointed at the screen when they saw their names appear. A suggestion of Alvarez or Luis Torrens for a young Yankees starting pitcher might break the internet. The Yankees giving up any promising young player to get Torrens back is admitting defeat when all they got was cash from the Mets in 2024.

Any sort of ready-made starting pitcher or a player at another position is one way for the Mets to keep the fans’ interest for the rest of 2026. They’ve already debuted Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing. More from the young trio of Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, and Zac Thornton will have fans invested even if it’s more casual than other years.

A challenge for the Mets in any attempt to acquire a starting pitcher for 2027 and beyond is they don’t have too many great trade chips to deal away. The craziest thing to do would be to trade away one of their major league players and use the prospect(s) acquired to get someone else.
