It won’t take the New York Mets long to gain a better grasp of what they gave up at last month’s trade deadline. In a lineup featuring Dominic Smith batting cleanup, the San Francisco Giants started Drew Gilbert in right field in the number nine hole. Summoned to the major leagues quickly after being acquired, they aren’t about to wait for unboxing their new toy.

A 7 for 14 performance in Triple-A Sacramento for Gilbert was enough for his new organization to decide it was enough to see what he could do in the majors. Gilbert’s debut featured a 5-0 Giants win at home over the Washington Nationals. Would he be a part of the club’s success or a background character?

The Mets will quickly learn whether or not Drew Gilbert was worth keeping around

Trading Gilbert, Blade Tidwell, and Jose Butto to rent Tyler Rogers for two months wasn’t a bad deal logically. Our hearts, because of how much the team seemed invested in Gilbert just two years ago, told us something completely different. Tidwell was a noteworthy Mets pitching prospect for a few years, somewhat classified in the same way as Butto was as someone most likely destined for a bullpen role or back-of-rotation arm.

In his first game, Gilbert took an 0 for 4 with a strikeout in his major league debut. He grounded out to first base with a runner on third his second time up. No runner held up. He would’ve fit right in with the Mets, eh? A groundout and a pop out completed his uneventful MLB debut. He did catch all three balls in the ninth hit by the Nationals for outs. I suppose the Giants could have just put that enormous glove from left field out there to get the job done, too. However, it probably wouldn't have been able to make this snag he had earlier in the game.

Mets fans will have the temptation to check in on Gilbert every once in a while. Cedric Mullins has started off his tenure going 1 for 17. It’s never too early to second-guess. At least for one night, Gilbert hasn’t proven the solution was right under the Mets’ noses.
