1) Brandon Sproat

Most people’s number one Mets prospect also happens to be the most exciting. Is this always the case? Probably. When Francisco Alvarez was sitting pretty as the number one prospect in all of baseball back in 2022, he also happened to be the guy we were all most excited to see come to Queens. The same rule applies for Brandon Sproat who has the weight of the future on his shoulders. No pressure, kid.

For those same reasons Jonah Tong has become an impressive prospect we can’t wait to see reach the show, Sproat is leaps, bounds, and maybe even the scaling of a skyscraper ahead of him. In his first year pitching professionally in 2024, Sproat couldn’t have been much better. Although he’d ultimately see his overall numbers decline with 7 so-so starts at the end of the year in Syracuse, there’s no denying he is the one we should be pleading to see at the major league level more than anyone else.

Here’s what Sproat has going for him over everyone else. First, he’s a pitcher. Mets fans love young, homegrown arms. Mentioned previously in the section about Tong you most assuredly clung to every word of, the Mets’ reputation as a ball club that values pitching for much of their history adds to the allure. Secondly, he’s so darn close to the majors. We got to experience a taste of Christian Scott last year in the early part of the season. Sproat could very well make his MLB debut after just a handful of starts depending on the health and production of others.

Sproat has a unique distinction of being drafted three times, twice by the Mets in consecutive years. He didn’t sign the first time with the Texas Rangers in 2019 nor did he sign with the Mets in 2022 as a third-round selection. It just seems like everything is aligning well for Sproat to be an impactful player for many years. He’ll be one of the most discussed prospects this year and if he’s good enough, a major league contributor for a good chunk of the season.
