Unless you closely watch them play, it’s hard to rank prospects without just looking at statistics and trying to find an algorithm. Every prospect list is somewhat different with a variety of players ranking much more highly than others. We tend to see several of the same New York Mets prospects within everyone’s top 10, ranking them by ability, upside, and specific tools they possess.
Lacking the luxury of seeing them play or having the insight directly from coaches who’d know their potential best, what is the common fan to think? As fans, we look at things differently. A player grading a 55 in arm strength is only one element of the excitement.
These aren’t the top 5 Mets prospects based on a normalized ranking system. Rather, they’re the top 5 based on how excited we should be to see them come up through the system. Some are already within pamphlet-handing distance of entering the door.
5) Elian Pena
The organization’s newest star international prospect signing, Elian Pena is someone we’re going to hear a lot about in the coming years. There isn't an abundance of available statistics for us to sift through. We’re going to need to count on him being one of the best international prospects to justify our excitement.
An infielder who’ll begin his journey with the Mets as a 17-year-old, he’s the highest ranked international prospect the Mets have added since MLB Pipeline began their lists back in 2012. Praised for his bat speed from the left side of the plate, many have compared him to Rafael Devers and do believe he’ll end up as a third base option in the future.
It’s going to be a long journey before the excitement level makes us shake in our knees. We’re giving the experts and Mets the benefit of the doubt that this is indeed someone who’ll have a major impact in the coming years.
