We probably don’t fully grasp how especially grand it was for the New York Mets to land Bo Bichette. We’re still debating whether he’ll be a good third baseman or not. How does he fit the Mets lineup? What else could they have done instead? Those kinds of things.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies are apparently livid. They truly believed Bichette was theirs. Blame the Los Angeles Dodgers for taking Kyle Tucker, not us.
Phillies reporter Jim Salisbury put things into a perspective we can all understand. He compared it to the 1978 Lufthansa heist at LaGuardia, made more famous in the film Goodfellas.
As far back as he can remember, Bo Bichette didn’t always want to be a Mets player
Bichette was born in Orlando and remained in Florida for high school and college. He didn’t have the kind of ties to an organization other than the Toronto Blue Jays who drafted him back in 2016. There was never a thought of him joining the Miami Marlins or Tampa Bay Rays to be “closer to home.” The Blue Jays seemed to prefer other options on their infield with the desire to add Tucker to their outfield group.
The Phillies had no such ties to Bichette either, but in need of a third base upgrade over Alec Bohm, making him a star attraction seemed preferable. They’ve had a decent offseason but have lacked any true headline-grabbing moves. Adolis Garcia won’t sell tickets or win pennants.
The Goodfellas comparison seems all-too-perfect for how things played out with maybe the only problem being the Mets play across from LaGuardia, not JFK where the theft took place. It doesn’t matter. The Mets ran off with the prize, leaving the Phillies with no choice but to challenge for Cody Bellinger should they feel he’s the best way to pay back the Mets. Let ‘em.
Of course, there is one other way the Phillies could possibly punch back at the Mets. An ace named Tarik Skubal has yet to change teams and the Phillies, with Zack Wheeler gone to begin the year, should certainly be considered an outlying team to acquire him. This is a ball club that already lost Ranger Suarez in free agency. They’ve kept the core relatively intact. If you’re going to run things back, you chase after Skubal in your helicopters.
