NY Mets stat involving Mark Vientos reconfirms the lineup’s biggest concern

Call him "castaway" because he keeps getting stranded.

It was Mark Vientos who played hero for the New York Mets on Saturday night in San Francisco. A two-run double was all they’d tack onto the scoreboard. It was all they needed in a game where David Peterson once again showed why he was an All-Star this season.

Vientos has been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks. Still an imperfect fit on the team, he has been one of their better hitters in July as far as batting average goes. Although it’s .246, it’s fifth on the team and 20+ points above Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto.

The two stars aren’t hitting quite as much as the Mets need them to, but still have double-digit runs and RBI totals. Not Vientos. He has driven in 6 runs this month which isn’t bad. He has yet to score.

How has Mark Vientos gone all month and not scored a run?

Vientos hasn’t been getting on base a lot. He has drawn a single walk, relying on his bat to do the loudest talking. It’s not as if they’ve all been singles either. Vientos has 4 doubles and a triple this month. Sans home run, this notable absence from the stat logs is a reminder of where the team’s biggest weakness is; at the bottom of the order.

The lone reinforcement capable of driving in Vientos looks to be Francisco Alvarez although it’s still too early to fully guarantee he’ll be a beast. We know the deal with Tyrone Taylor. And lately, if Brandon Nimmo isn’t getting the big hit at the top of the order, Lindor and Soto hadn’t been either.

It’s not necessarily an exclusive to Vientos problem. Even though Brett Baty has scored 10 runs in July, he has only 28 on the season versus Vientos’ 22. With 5 more home runs than Vientos, they help account for the difference.

A number five hitter against lefties, maybe, and more of a seventh where he found himself on Saturday versus a righty, we shouldn’t expect Vientos to lead the team in runs scored or come close to it. He has played quite a bit this month. Hayden Senger managed to score twice. How has Vientos not accidentally crossed home?
