If you’ve eaten your vitamin A, you might actually be able to see how close the start of New York Mets spring training is. Some important dates are now known. Here’s the skinny on what the next few weeks will look like as we inch closer to Opening Day.
When do Mets pitchers and catchers report?
The first sign of spring’s arrival is the report date for pitchers and catchers. Monday, February 10, is the date when we’ll first see every pitcher and catcher required to show up to St. Lucie. It’s not unusual for them to get there early. Even position players will be spotted at the training facilities although they aren’t required to show up quite as early. The timing couldn’t be more perfect as it’s the day after the Super Bowl.
The first pitchers and catchers workout will take place two days later on February 12.
When is the first full squad workout for the Mets?
A week after pitchers and catchers, the entire roster will be required to attend the team’s first squad workout. Monday February 17, is President’s Day. For everyone invited to Mets camp it’ll feel more like—here comes a lame dad joke—Presence Day! Oye.
When is the Mets first spring training game?
The following Saturday is when the first Mets spring training game will take place. They’ll play host to their Opening Day opponent, the Houston Astros. February 22 will be the official return of 9-inning Mets baseball against a team in a different uniform. We’ll get a pitching matchup between some guy you’ve never heard of and a 31-year-old journeyman you swore was out of the league years ago.
Less than a month remains between now and when the satisfying sounds of baseballs hitting catchers mitts. Plenty of roster moves left to make, spring training battle debates, and some hot takes about who’ll do what in the coming season will lead the discussion soon enough.
