3) The Mets should consider Max Kranick for the rotation

Max Kranick has been really good this spring. A leftover from last year’s club whose popularity is growing for more than his on-field performance (growing up a David Wright fan is relatable), his success as a reliever in the minors last season and now in small doses during spring training suggests he might be an Opening Day roster candidate. Moreover, the loss of Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas seemed to push him up the depth chart into being at least a long man out of the bullpen.

What’s the overreaction here? Thinking Kranick should actually get a starting rotation gig.

The Mets will begin the year with five starters and there’s little doubt who they’ll be. Paul Blackburn and Griffin Canning essentially won two spots because of injuries. One was bound for the bullpen originally. Now, they’ll get to prove themselves in a place they’ve spent most of their careers: from inning one onward.

Kranick shouldn’t be written off as a rotation down the line, but failures as a starter as recently as last year in Triple-A should have the Mets aiming to get the most out of him as a multi-inning reliever first before pulling any sort of trigger to turn back time. David Stearns runs this team, not Cher.

Put Kranick on the Opening Day roster and let him eat up innings in relief. Anything more is too extreme for now.
