We’re still in the early stages of New York Mets spring training but already there have been some moments, achievements, or highlights causing fans to overreact. What better time to ignore logic and think in extremes? One big game will have fans insistent on promoting a young kid too quickly. A bad pitch will have fans questioning if someone deserves to be cut from the roster.

Odds are, you or someone you know is already feeling at least one of these thoughts about the Mets this spring. Less practical and more of an overreaction, you’re far from alone when it comes to having any of these thoughts.

1) Jose Siri is about to have a monstrous season

There is going to be a time when Jose Siri wins Player of the Week this year but it’ll come sandwich between lengthy slumps where he can’t buy a hit let alone make much contact at all. To suggest what he has done this spring is any indication of a change in style is complete nonsense. It’s spring training.

All three of Siri’s hits have been home runs, coming out to a lopsided .250/.438/1.000 slash line. He has predictably struck out 4 times but also drawn 3 walks.

So far in his career, Siri has shown a tendency to play to extremes. It isn’t outrageous to believe he’ll have a better batting average or be on the higher side of his home run potential. It’s simply too much of a reach to believe three quick home runs this spring have much meaning when he has hit for good power in each of the last two seasons. If he strikes out in 8 consecutive plate appearances, it’ll be just as meaningful for what he has in store for 2025.
