3 Silver Slugger pairings NY Mets fans wish they could’ve seen

Crossing eras is something a baseball fan never gets the courtesy of witnessing. Imagine Tom Seaver in the same rotation as Jacob deGrom. That’s how you start your all-time New York Mets roster.

The Mets have had more than some all-time great pitchers. Handing an offensive player a Silver Slugger is another acknowledgment of the superb season they just finished.

The award didn’t start until 1980. Every decade has featured at least one player grabbing the honor. If you could pair them up without having to worry about the passage of time, these are three duos fans would have loved to see.

The Mets Silver Slugger duos we wish we got to experience

1) Mike Piazza in 2000 and Pete Alonso in 2025

As soon as you finish dealing with the 2000 version of Mike Piazza, you have to handle the 2025 model of Pete Alonso. It doesn’t really matter which year of these two right-handed sluggers you pick. The right-handed power they showed off is unmatched in Mets history.

Piazza won a Silver Slugger every season from 1998-2002. The 2000 campaign was his best full year with the Mets, finishing with a 1.012 OPS. He hit .324 while slugging 38 home runs and driving in 114. Alonso’s one-and-only Silver Slugger with the Mets in 2025 featured a .274 batting average, 38 home runs, and 126 RBI. The .871 OPS wasn’t Piazza-ish but neither is this era of baseball.

2) Keith Hernandez in 1984 and Jeff McNeil in 2022

When we think of the word “slugger” home runs immediately come to mind. Not necessarily. Keith Hernandez proved, in an MVP-runner up season in 1984, you can provide offense in other ways. So did Jeff McNeil in 2022.

Hernandez hit .311 with a .409 OBP and 15 home runs during his only Silver Slugger season. The MVP honors had as much to do with the defense. McNeil was a far milder MVP candidate, finishing 15th in the race. However, his .326 batting average led the league. He only swatted 9 home runs all year, but 39 doubles helped him slug .454.

3) Gary Carter in 1985 and David Wright in 2007

Gary Carter had a monster offensive season in year one with the Mets in 1985. It earned him his fourth Silver Slugger, one more on the way in 1986. David Wright won his first of two Silver Sluggers in 2007 in a year that ranks as the best bWAR season in Mets history.

Beloved Mets captains, you are of course welcome to swap out Carter for Hernandez. Carter belted 32 home runs and drove in 100 while batting .281 for the Mets in 1985. Wright had 30 home runs and 107 RBI with an outrageous .325 batting average. His 2008 season with a Silver Slugger was just as good, if not better, in some regards.
