The New York Mets' 2025 season ended once again in disappointment; after being 21 games over .500 in June, the team played like a bottom-feeder the rest of the way, resulting in them missing the playoffs. That being said, there's no reason not to still enjoy the postseason as a Mets fan. There's a lot of work to be done by Stearns and Co. this offseason, and a lot of potential free agent adds play significant roles this October.

1. Kyle Schwarber

Schwarber is a player the Mets should be targeting, regardless of what happens with Pete Alonso. If they decide to move on from Pete, dare I say Schwarber becomes an expectation? Slashing .240/.365/.563 this season with an NL-leading 56 home runs and a MLB-leading 132 RBI, it's needless to say, Schwarber would serve as a more-than-sufficient power replacement.

Don't get it twisted; the Mets' priority should be retaining Alonso. Whether or not they manage to do so, though, Schwarber would add another power bat to a team that had numerous offensive shortcomings this season, despite a lineup that at times appeared stacked on paper. One of the Mets' more specific troubles, something that seems to be a recurring issue for them, is scoring with runners in scoring position; Schwarber had a 1.004 OPS with RISP over the regular season, and a .852 OPS in high leverage.

Schwarber would provide the Mets with their first genuine designated hitter opportunity since the National League adopted the DH in 2022; no more shuffling through guys like Daniel Vogelbach, Starling Marte, or a 36-year-old J.D. Martinez. Especially given the possibility that we see Mark Vientos traded this offseason, there's no reason for the Mets not to give it their all with Schwarber.
