3 games on the NY Mets schedule Steve Cohen, David Stearns aren't looking forward to

The owner and POBO might want to wear a disguise for these games.

Maybe the biggest miscalculation of all with the 2026 New York Mets came from whoever decided to wait to start selling tickets for the final weeks. In late April, fans began to discuss the inability to buy tickets for the final three months of the season. The assumption was they’d be able to dynamically price games, raising the cost based on opponent and importance.

The Mets were rightfully mocked for this unfriendly choice. The 12-game losing streak buried them already and while this season has had its fun players, they’re severely lacking excellent moments.

It won’t be someone behind the scenes who ends up lambasted most. Steve Cohen and David Stearns will receive the mockery when these three games come up on the Mets schedule to finish off the year.

August 19 - Freddy Peralta replica jersey

Freddy Peralta is likely to be long gone by the time the Mets hand out his replica jersey. Who thought it was a good idea to schedule it this late in the year? Was the thinking that too early would risk a random preseason injury? In any case, the August 19th Peralta jersey giveaway against the San Diego Padres at least provides some chance he’s in the ballpark. They are a team who have scouted him. Approaching even more quickly is the July 25th Peralta bobblehead. He should at least be around for this giveaway.

September 14, 15, 16 - Pete Alonso returns

Three games at Citi Field for Pete Alonso in 2026 couldn’t have been timed more poorly. Hey, the Mets had nothing to do with it. The mid-September return happens in the middle of the week and what would normally be a ghost town should be a little more crowded and not because Baltimore Orioles fans are driving up. Alonso’s return will have fans going out of their way to see him again and inevitably chanting his name throughout. The real issue comes up when Alonso faces a pitcher who is more than a rental. Are fans really going to root for him against Nolan McLean? They illogically will and that’s their right, especially for showing up in September.

September 19 - Carlos Beltran number retirement

This will be an unfortunate one and the Mets should get blamed for it. Why wait until September 19th? On one hand, the lost season does suggest the attendance for this one gets a slight bump. The problem is it won’t be enough on a Saturday afternoon against the Philadelphia Phillies. Sadly, the day Carlos Beltran has his number retired by the Mets could be filled by out-of-towners watching their team clinch a playoff berth. Beltran already has a complicated Mets history. Heading into Cooperstown in late July, the Mets probably should have had this one scheduled before school went back in session.
