The Mets should put Carlos Mendoza on notice

Firing Carlos Mendoza would be short-sighted. Unless there is something we don’t know about lurking behind the scenes with the players revolting, there’s no chance the Mets pull the plug this quickly. He is, brace yourselves, our Aaron Boone.

This doesn’t mean we’ll grow to despise his presence. Mendoza was the handpicked manager choice by Stearns. He’s going to get a deserved longer leash. This isn’t a situation like it was with Luis Rojas when he was the publicly known alternative to Carlos Beltran. One really good one and one where the team has faded should only have us putting Mendoza on notice.

Since Terry Collins, the Mets haven’t kept a manager for more than two years. Mickey Callaway in 2018-2019, Rojas 2020-2021, and then Buck Showalter 2022-2023 gave the Mets the kind of instability no organization should aim for. Only Showalter ever felt destined to maybe last a little longer with Callaway getting only one year under Brodie Van Wagenen.

The kind of magic Mendoza had in 2024 hasn’t been present in 2025. It’s true for the entire team, though. They’ve lacked fire, intensity, and urgency.

Captains of cruise ships don’t get blamed for the DJ’s music selection. They should be held accountable for sinking the boat. Mendoza should consider himself lucky to have a life jacket earned last year.
