The New York Mets have been no strangers when it comes to adding ex-Yankees over the years. From Juan Soto to Devin Williams to Luke Weaver to Clay Holmes to Luis Severino, the Mets have brought in quite a few former Yankees players in the last three seasons alone.
The Yankees have a number of key players set to become free agents this upcoming offseason, and at least a few of them could fit the Mets.
Here are three options that just feel like they will be linked to the Mets on the rumor mill this winter.
David Bednar
Because why not? Yankees closer David Bednar has been nails this year in the backend of the bullpen in the Bronx. Bednar has notched 31 saves in 34 chances, while posting a 6-3 record, 2.73 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 65 strikeouts across 59.1 innings (55 appearances).
The Yankees acquired Bednar at last year's trade deadline in a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. If the Mets are unsure about Devin Williams being their closer next season, they could bring in Bednar to fill the role in the ninth inning.
Trent Grisham
This is a move that would make Mets fans collectively groan. But not so fast. Grisham is currently the Yankees' starting center fielder and is having a poor season while playing on a one-year, $22.05 million qualifying offer. For that role and that price, it's acceptable for Yankees fans to be disappointed.
However, the Mets could use a fourth outfielder after trading Tyrone Taylor and letting go of Luis Robert Jr. on waivers. If Grisham is available at a fair price, he could make sense as a viable backup outfielder option.
Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Another move that would cause displeasure amongst Mets fans would be signing second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. But Chisholm will likely need to sign a one-year prove it deal to regain his value given he has had a down contract year in 2026 with the Yankees. Chisholm is one year removed from posting a 30/30 season in 2025, and the Mets need a second baseman.
He could be a stopgap option at the position until top prospect and 2025 first-round draft pick Mitch Voit is ready for the big leagues. The Mets cannot go into next season relying on Marcus Semien or Jorge Polanco to play second base across a full campaign. For that, it feels like they could be linked to Chisholm in free agency this offseason.
