An interesting name has seemed to appear on the trade block on Sunday morning and it's a name that many New York Mets fans are very familiar with in, Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa. Many fans remember the saga that surrounded Correa back in December 2022, when it had appeared he had agreed to a 12-year $315 million deal that ultimately never came to fruition after concerns with Correa's ankle, and he ended up signing with the Minnesota Twins for six years and $200 million.
Former Major Leaguer Carlos Baerga who is very in tune with the market had reported on Sunday morning via his Instagram, that the Minnesota Twins would be actively shopping Correa this offseason and listed the Mets as a potential suitor, in addition to the New York Yankees as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers. All three of these organizations could use a bat such as Correa's and also have the finicianal flexibility to take on the remainder of Correa's contract.
The New York Mets could be a serious suitor for Carlos Correa this winter, if they lose their star first baseman.
From the Mets' perspective, the only way this deal would make sense would be as one of the last resort options in regards to them potentially losing Pete Alonso in free agency this winter. With the team's full focus on Juan Soto right now, it seems the Alonso situation is currently not at the forefront of the front office's mind, but should Alonso leave, the Mets would have to pivot on their first base plans.
Correa could potentially play third base for the Mets, where they had intended to originally have him play when they came to an agreement two offseasons ago, and then shift Mark Vientos to first base permanently. It is a move that also would probably not cost the Mets a lot in terms of top prospect capital since they would be eating the remainder of the four years left on Correa's deal.
Ultimately this is another name to watch this winter on the trade block as the hot stove begins to heat up as we approach the Winter Meetings, but I would not expect the Mets to be a serious suitor for the Mets just quite yet until both the Juan Soto and Pete Alonso saga's resolve themselves.
