A name appearing in New York Mets rumors yesterday to shock no one was Starling Marte. The arrival of Juan Soto to the ball club was mostly inconsequential when it came to his future in Queens. Clearly no longer good enough for everyday right field duties nor the ideal DH you’d want on your roster, shopping Marte for relief help makes complete sense.
But where to?
When looking at potential landing spots for Marte, one needs to dive deeper than the right field situation. Marte is going to be a part-time defender and part-time DH for anywhere he might play. It would also need to be a team hoping to contend next season with relievers to spare. The Cincinnati Reds to get on the phone with.
How Mets rumors involving Starling Marte could lead them to the Reds
A .589 OPS from Reds DHs last season was the second lowest in baseball behind only the Texas Rangers. They didn’t get much out of their right fielders either with a combined .700 OPS there. Last year, Marte had a .715 OPS which would magically upgrade what the Reds received.
There are two sides to every trade. For all of the same reasons the Mets should look to move Marte, the Reds should have their hesitation. We can sell this idea to them further by citing their team .226/308/.365 slash line against left-handed pitching in 2024. The batting average was the third-worst in MLB. Marte hit .310/.384/.460 last season versus lefties.
The Reds have a couple of relievers to think about. Lefties Sam Moll and Brent Suter each had good years in 2024. Suter is someone David Stearns already knows from the Milwaukee Brewers days. Those would be two satisfying targets. Either would fill a need for the Mets. The Reds wouldn’t have to scramble to find a southpaw for their bullpen as they’d only be giving up one in the deal.
A trade involving Marte should have two goals for the Mets. One is to shed some of his salary (they’re going to have to eat a lot of it). The other is to open up a roster spot. They’re limited right now with Marte squeezed out of regular playing time in right field. Any relief help the Mets can get will be great. The available roster spot to punctuate this offseason further with an addition adds to how important finding a taker will be.
