Sure sounds like this team could be clearing room on the roster for Mets free agent Pete Alonso

Already a match for Pete Alonso, this team is rumored to be shopping their first baseman in trades.

For a free agent who gets a lot of criticism, there sure are a lot of places where Pete Alonso could logically end up. Back with the New York Mets, of course, is one option. Way out west is another.

When it comes to the guessing game of where Alonso can land, we need to find a vacancy at first base. Clubs like the Seattle Mariners, Washington Nationals, and even the New York Yankees have room. Then there’s the San Francisco Giants.

Regularly bouquet-less bridesmaids when it comes to the big free agent splashes in recent years, recent Giants rumors have suggested the team could be clearing a roster spot to open up first base. They’re shopping LaMonte Wade Jr., a talented hitter but one without much power to speak of.

It’s impossible to deny the similarity between Alonso and some other Scott Boras clients. Last offseason, we saw Blake Snell settle on a short deal with an opt out after the first season which he flexed after a productive conclusion with the Giants. Matt Chapman had a similar fate. He was extended before getting a chance to decide to head back into free agency.

These types of contracts have become increasingly more common. A player like Alonso, who had a down season in 2024, seems like an appropriate candidate to receive one as well. The Giants were willing to go there last year. Why wouldn’t they do it again with a big and powerful slugger like Alonso?

This is a team that had plans of employing Aaron Judge. They already traded away Jorge Soler. Rather than go cheap and re-sign Mark Canha who finished the year them and name him the first baseman, a deal with Alonso will add some excitement for a team now run by Buster Posey in the front office.

San Francisco isn’t the greatest landing spot for a power hitter looking to possibly put together a better season for a second chance at free agency. By all indications, the goal is to get the most money possible. Trading Wade away is one step toward making their move on Alonso. If they’re not going to be in on the Juan Soto sweepstakes, they mine as well start targeting the consolation prizes.
