NY Mets rumors link scouts to specific Cubs minor league team with limited options

Another trade between the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs feels very possible with the DFA of Jameson Taillon. Not only were the Cubs already a clear match for some relievers from Queens, they’re a greater one for Clay Holmes or Freddy Peralta.

According to Atholon’s Pat Ragazzo, Mets scouts were spotted at one very specific site. He shared Mets rumors declaring the team was doing their due diligence on the Double-A Knoxville Smokies.

The Cubs have a variety of prospects who’d fit the Mets well. A couple of first basemen, some pitching, and even outfielders would all make sense. The Mets won’t get picky about where a guy plays as long as he has a promising future. Unfortunately, most of the best Cubs prospects aren’t in Double-A.

Jefferson Rojas is their second-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline and in Double-A. After him, there’s a bit of a fall. Pitcher Brooks Caple hasn’t pitched for a couple of days so showing up to scout him would mostly involve taking notes on how he holds a radar gun (do minor league pitchers not scheduled to pitch still do that?).

Catcher Ariel Armas is hitting .211 and certainly an option as a target. Although ranked, he seems more built from the Tomas Nido school of hitting.

In Tuesday’s game, two of the relievers having a better season who did appear are already in their age 26 season. While nice additions as a secondary or third piece in a trade, Evan Taylor or Tyler Ras don’t excite. However, we shouldn’t dismiss the idea of the Mets and Cubs linking up on an underwhelming trade for them either. Daniel Duarte for a random minor leaguer having a good year isn’t something to scoff at.

The Cubs have one of the more intriguing farm systems when it comes to a trade with the Mets. There’s a lot of variety and guys having good years despite not standing out in their own rankings. First baseman Jonathon Long mashing for the second straight year in Triple-A is one example of a guy who feels blocked. Maybe him and one of those lesser options in Double-A is the start of a larger trade between these clubs.
