Scott Boras’ latest Cody Bellinger note probably meant to spark NY Mets rumors

Scott Boras is giving the Mets every reason to keep Cody Bellinger in mind this offseason.

Scott Boras did a lot of talking this week. It’s his chance to get in front of an audience, throw out some dad jokes, and remind us all how much of a stranglehold he has on the MLB offseason. With free agent Pete Alonso as one of his most prolific clients, Boras was also mastering a way to spark other New York Mets rumors.

In his evaluation of the dream Mets fit to play some first base and center field, he went through the tools Cody Bellinger could bring to any team. Lastly, he threw out a mention of how Bellinger has been successful in every major market.

It is quite unique how Bellinger has managed to hop from Los Angeles to Chicago and New York. Successful in at least one season at each stop, the next major market for him would be staying in the Big Apple but changing boroughs.

Cody Bellinger passes the “can he handle New York?” test for Mets fans

The same reason we want no part of a trade for Sonny Gray is why Bellinger could be an offseason match. Players who seem to flame out in the big markets become an automatic hard pass. Gray is the ultimate example of a player who has often become available but his time with the Yankees eliminated him from any consideration for Mets fans.

Quite the opposite is true with Bellinger. Growing up as a member of the Dodgers and recuperating with the Cubs in Chicago, there isn’t another big market he needs to prove himself in. Boston and Philadelphia are right up there in terms of fandom, but they don’t seem like as good of fits for Bellinger as the Mets would be.

Bread crumbs about where he will sign based on interest from different teams have been dropping with the Mets having no way to eliminate him from the conversation. Even if they plan to have Carson Benge compete for a center field job, Bellinger is an option at first base. And even if they sign Alonso, Bellinger is someone who could bounce around all three outfield positions and play first base sometimes with the DH spot becoming a rotation platform.

Boras was asked an important question about Alonso. Although he kind of answered it, he did so in his own unique and cringy way.

He has been doing this long enough to know that no doors should be shut. He already has the Mets and Yankees competing over Bellinger. A market for Alonso has stirred further with the longtime Mets first baseman being open to a DH role although we’d have to believe it was more agent talk than what the player truly desires.
