Pete Alonso to the Boston Red Sox has gained steam with rumors over the weekend proclaiming he’d be the preferred choice over Kyle Schwarber. It seems New York Mets rumors will cross over closely with a few things the Red Sox could do this offseason.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi added to the copycat moves Boston could make. Regarded as one of the top trade candidates for the Mets this offseason, he named the Red Sox as a team that could come and take Freddy Peralta off the trade block.

It sounds like the Red Sox are going to give the Mets some of the biggest competition this offseason
The Peralta connection to the Mets should go beyond just familiarity with David Stearns. An excellent pitcher making just $8 million this coming year, he’d fit onto the Mets payroll nicely. The team is going to have a difficult time not going over the highest levels of MLB’s luxury tax. Even if they do go over, taming salaries will be necessary to avoid any additional penalties. There comes a point where you have to practically step away from certain contract commitments.
The Mets and Red Sox have operated in similar manners over the last two seasons. Each has taken chances on bounce back candidates, Boston doing so with Walker Buehler last year and to an extent, Lucas Giolito the season prior. The two clubs have even made multiple minor trades. Pablo Reyes, Justin Slaten, and Eddy Alvarez are three players who’ve swapped ball employers.
The results haven’t been all that different either with the two clubs reversing roles in 2024 and 2025. Boston fell short of a playoff berth in 2024. In 2025, it was the Mets’ turn. Alonso only seemed to be a mild consideration for Boston last season. Their failed attempt to move Rafael Devers across the diamond to first base resulted in the star slugger getting traded to the San Francisco Giants early in 2025. Months later, they’re on the prowl for a more permanent solution than what they ended up with at the position.
Morosi believing the Red Sox are a starting pitcher away from making a run is bold. Peralta would give them three really good arms, led by Garrett Crochet and followed by Brayan Bello. The threesome would indeed be impressive. With Giolito now a free agent, they’ll have a more obvious need to give themselves at least enough ammunition to get through a short playoff round.
The Mets should remain one of the top landing spots for Peralta just as the Red Sox will for Alonso. The same reasons we’d like each of them, so will the Red Sox.
