NY Mets rumors: Husbands know Pete Alonso is destined to sign with the Red Sox

Location is the one thing the Mets can never give Pete Alonso.

What would a Florida kid want to do with Massachusetts? Don’t we Northeasterners go south and not vice versa? It works a little differently in sports. You follow the money. When it comes to New York Mets free agent Pete Alonso, every action and word seems to suggest he’ll go wherever the money is.

But what if everything’s equal? There will be a line in the sand drawn by the Mets. A team who fits the need for a right-handed power bat at first base like Alonso are the Boston Red Sox. Less annoying than if he was to sign with the New York Yankees, the NY Post’s Jon Heyman found the number one reason why Alonso is destined to end up with the Red Sox when it’s all over with.

In discussing Alonso’s future, he points out one of the number one reasons why we make any decisions we do in life: family. Alonso’s wife is originally from Boston. And with an infant joining the family, being close to your village is pretty important.

Pete Alonso’s family obligations give the Red Sox an edge over the Mets

Other than being a member of the Mets, there’s no commitment to the city of New York. From Tampa and schooled in Gainesville, Alonso is culturally different from the fast-paced “hey, I’m walkin’ here!” attitude many of us carry. An obvious goof with a chilled southern vibe, it’s not exactly as if he has ever had the New York kind of attitude we sometimes demand from our athletes.

That’s not to say Alonso has been a bad fit as a person or player. On the contrary, he embraced the Big Apple from the start. He was the largest proponent in allowing MLB to actually honor 9/11 with something as simple as FDNY and NYPD hats. This was done while playing as a rookie in 2019. Instantly, he already understood what it meant to be a New Yorker.

Alonso’s life is about to change more than ever. Marriage is one thing. A baby added to the mix adds a whole new element to the equation. Sleepless nights, tummy time, and burp clothes will be a big part of his life this winter. The closer he can be to family, perhaps in Boston, the better for everyone.

It’s not unusual for players to sign with a team from their hometown or where their wife is from. In the case of Dansby Swanson, he went to the Chicago Cubs while his wife, Mallory, played for the women’s soccer team in the city, Chicago Stars FC.

These are dots worth connecting that go beyond any statistic. The Red Sox are already a match for Alonso. A happy wife equals a happy life. If Mama Wifey Haley Alonso wants Boston and the Red Sox like Alonso enough, that’s where the Polar Bear goes.
