NY Mets rumors: Luis Robert trade unlikely, White Sox wanted untouchable prospect

A Luis Robert Jr. trade is sounding less likely in part because the asking price is outrageous.

The back and forth between the New York Mets and Chicago White Sox isn’t going to end anytime soon with less than 4 hours to go before the MLB trade deadline. According to the most recent Mets rumors, it doesn’t sound like the White Sox have been motivated enough to move Luis Robert.

What’s the hold up? Over at MLB Network, they reportedly were demanding the Mets give up Jonah Tong in a deal.

No, seriously. The prize of the Mets farm system is what you think you can get? For a guy barely hitting over .200? The minor league leader in strikeouts rising through the rankings and destined to be in the rotation at some point next season?

The White Sox are being unreasonable to ask for Jonah Tong in trade negotations with the Mets

If that’s how the White Sox are going to play this, they better start saving to pay Robert his full salary next season. The urgency to trade him isn’t there at the moment, but they aren’t going to get any top 100 prospect in exchange for Robert.

Just a week ago, the reported asking price for Robert was multiple mid-tier prospects. A good guess was players ranked in the teens within a farm system.

The White Sox, who get overlooked in MLB history for all of the losing they’ve done thanks to sharing a city with the Chicago Cubs, might be on the verge of losing another opportunity. There are good Mets prospects or young players in the majors (Mark Vientos specifically) who can be acquired for Robert.

Asking for Tong in exchange for Robert should come with a pair of Groucho Marx glasses, a purple wig, and one of those arrows you put around your head where it looks like it went in one ear and out the other.

It’s not disastrous if the Mets fail to acquire Robert before 6pm today. It’s only a problem if they’re unable to pivot to another bat. This team has proven a few too many times bad the offense can be. Look no further than their most recent series which felt like a tribute to the 2022 NLWC round against the San Diego Padres.
