NY Mets rumors: Did MLB insider just hint at a Francisco Alvarez trade?

MLB trade deadline day is a national holiday for fans of the sport. Whether your team buys or sells, it’s an exciting day for lovers of drama, change, and brighter futures ahead. Every single team should come out of the MLB trade deadline as a better ball club even if it’s not immediate. This includes the New York Mets who’ve been actively adding minor leaguers.

One player up for debate to trade is Francisco Alvarez. Once regarded as a top prospect in the sport, he has developed into a really good and powerful hitter, showing signs of being far more well-rounded this season.

The NY Post’s Jon Heyman shot off a tweet that, intentionally or not, seemed to ignore his immediate future with the Mets. Was this nothing or a hint of something to come?

Did Jon Heyman forget about Francisco Alvarez or is he trying to insist the Mets will trade him?

The week’s long debate over trading a Mets catcher or not finally gets its resolution today. And interestingly, if the Mets were to trade one of them, Alvarez makes far more sense.

It doesn’t seem as if they’d get nearly enough in return for Torrens. Considering they just extended him for two more seasons, we should be skeptical they have much interest in it at all. Alvarez, on the other hand, taking his spot behind Torrens on the depth chart many times with his bat as the clear best attribute, could conceivably reward the Mets with the prospect return we’ve been waiting for David Stearns to add all summer.

If you’ve followed Heyman enough, you’ll know there’s as much of a chance this was neglectful as it was intentional. You don’t talk about Mets catcher trade candidates and mention Torrens without at least bringing up Alvarez’s name.

Thus far, the Mets have gotten underwhelming returns for the players they have traded. No one acquired has entered their top 10. An Alvarez trade, with catcher demand as high as it is, would change this. Alternatively, he’s a useful trade candidate for a major league player. Several controllable players have changed teams already, including ex-Mets reliever Huascar Brazoban. We'd surely expect much more for Alvarez with him feeling more like a headlining act in a trade for someone like Reid Detmers.
