Adam Ottavino is becoming one of the more interesting recent former New York Mets players. He’s like Trevor May but a little more unfiltered. Having spent three seasons with the Mets and a few others with the New York Yankees prior (and briefly again in 2025), he has the credentials to be a valuable voice in New York sports.
Along with his open criticism of how Carlos Mendoza has handled the pitchers, in particular around their injuries, Ottavino gave his thoughts on the situation with Brandon Nimmo.
While sharing a story about how proud he is and even went after SNY’s Andy Martino when he once ranked him behind Alex Verdugo on an all-New York team, Ottavino pontificated about why he doesn’t see trading Nimmo to be an easy task. He envisions Nimmo as someone who’d like to be a lifelong Mets player with his jersey one day hanging from the rafters.
Adam Ottavino doesn't see the Mets having a chance to trade Brandon Nimmo
Ottavino didn’t break any new ground or say anything we couldn’t have come to the same conclusion about. However, as someone who played with Nimmo for a few seasons, it confirms our assumption about how Nimmo might be feeling about the ongoing trade rumors.
His no-trade clause is a large obstacle to overcome. Unless Nimmo were to feel disrespected, as Ottavino put it, he’s not going anywhere.
At the tail end of his thoughts on the Nimmo trade rumors, Ottavino said “Stearns is not the best at communicating.” It sounds similar to his critique of Mendoza whose bullpen usage was questioned by Ottavino in the same livestream.
A disconnect between the president of baseball operations and players isn’t necessarily a bad thing. That’s why a manager is there in the first place. Front office folks can sometimes get a little too involved in situations. A happy medium is dependent on person-to-person. Ottavino doesn’t sound like he was particularly fond of his experience playing under Stearns.
Amazingly, Ottavino said nothing spectacularly new or surprising. What he did manage to do was fill in some of the dots. And with Andy Martino confirming the story about Nimmo, we know it’s not for attention.
True story but Brandon is such a good guy that of course we ended up having a great conversation. One of the boxes players I’ve covered
