Griffin Jax hasn't been very good since getting traded
A third reliever the Mets looked into was Griffin Jax from the Minnesota Twins. Jax's ERA of 4.50 with the Twins before the trade may not have looked great, but he had just a 2.06 FIP and 1.28 WHIP. Jax got well over a third of opponents to strikeout, with a 36.4% strikeout rate. Walks were also no issue, with a 6.6% BB%. Only four other relievers had a higher K%-BB% than Jax did at the time. Jax was also immune to home runs, with a 0.78 HR/9.
His ERA has only gotten worse with the Rays, rising to 5.54. However, the more worrying aspect is all of his peripherals. He has still struck out 18 opponents, but has allowed seven to reach via free pass. After allowing just four home runs in nearly 50 innings with the Twins, he's allowed three more in less than 15 frames (13.2 to be exact).
The Rays gave the Twins Taj Bradley for Jax. While Bradley hasn't done great this year, he is still a young, high-ceiling pitcher who looked solid during the 2024 season. If the Mets gave up any worthwhile prospect for Jax, they'd still be regretting the decision. It's a relief the Mets didn't end up getting Jax, even though he seemed to be a good fit for the Mets at the time of the deadline.
