We should hope the Mets rumors of their interest in Danny Coulombe come true

The Mets will land a left-handed reliever of some kind. Let’s hope it’s a good one. There may not be any southpaw reliever having a better season right now than Danny Coulombe. A 0.93 ERA in 29 innings of work, he is the perfect piece to pair alongside Brooks Raley in the bullpen. It was at an even more amazing 0.63 before allowing a run on Wednesday.

Fortunately for us, Mets rumors of their interest in Coulombe are already out there. The return of Raley from the IL is crucial to chasing Coulombe as they’d have Raley available as the primary lefty capable of facing batters of both kinds. Coulombe, if used the same way the Mets did Aaron Loup in 2021, would be an earlier inning or situational choice Carlos Mendoza can weaponize.

Coulombe has handled batters from both sides well, a .212 batting average against lefties and even better .167 against righties. Some may fear whatever deal he made with the devil to have such impressive numbers is about to run out. Certainly, with one of three runs allowed all year coming this week, anyone with those beliefs is clutching a religious necklace a little harder with the thought of him coming to the Mets and his good luck running out.

A good enough track record for several seasons, accepting that he won’t maintain the success is key to accepting this as a brilliant Mets trade target.
