The Waitresses is a band from Akron, Ohio active from 1978-1983. If you weren’t around back then, you didn’t miss much with the New York Mets. Musically, you didn’t get to experience the release of “I Know What Boys Like” which is their most recognizable song.

As Mets fans, we know what each other like, and what we want at this year’s trade deadline. The Waitresses aren’t around any longer to put together a song to explain how we feel in verse. We’ll have to find another way to express our feelings to David Stearns and the ongoing Mets rumors.

It does seem this summer has included far more Mets rumors than last year when the organization was in full plumber’s tape mode with its information. Tightly-sealed still, we have some idea of what the team will or won’t do at this year’s trade deadline. Two rumors we should cross our fingers to see happen. Another pair wouldn’t be so satisfying to experience.

We should hope the Mets rumors of their interest in Luis Robert Jr. come true

Mets rumors involving Luis Robert Jr. actually go back to May. The Chicago White Sox never stood a chance this season and their star center fielder’s contract, potential, and struggles all helped to make him one of the more fascinating trade candidates on the market this summer. Exactly how much would it cost to add a former rising star hitting below his weight? He’s listed at 225 lbs for what it’s worth.

Recent reports from The Athletic suggest the price might not be too outrageous, making a claim that multiple prospects on the back part of a team’s top 20 would suffice. In that case, bring him in!

There is no guarantee the White Sox actually do trade Robert. Multiple reports have the team in limbo as to what to do with him. Trading him now, at a low, doesn’t make as much sense as it would be to hold onto him and hope he rebuilds some stock for a future deal. The offseason will add to the number of suitors anyway. A club like the Baltimore Orioles about to lose their center fielder in free agency with plans of contending could be an option, just as an example.

Center field is the most obvious spot in the Mets lineup to upgrade. They clearly need another bat. Robert is having a down year and yet his presence would make the Mets better.
