3) Austin Warren

Another waiver claim by the Mets was Austin Warren. The right-handed reliever was acquired from the San Francisco Giants in January. Warren has pitched sparingly over the last four MLB seasons, tossing a total of 48.2 innings. For what it’s worth, Warren has done well with a 3.14 ERA, 3.91 FIP, and 1.25 WHIP. While he has a sub-20% strikeout rate at 18.8%, the right-hander has an above-average 0.92 HR/9 and a 7.4% walk rate.

Warren also did not pitch poorly at Triple-A in 2024. In 23 innings for the SF Giants’ Triple-A squad, Warren owned a 4.67 ERA, 4.32 FIP, and 1.19 WHIP. He only walked 5.2% of batters with a 27% strikeout rate. However, the right-hander was slightly below average at limiting home runs with a 1.33 HR/9 rate.

In terms of stuff, Warren isn’t an overpowering pitcher. Stuff+ pinned him at 98, making his pitch quality slightly below average. He only sits 93-94 MPH with his four-seam fastball. His slider is the only offering he uses regularly that has above-average movement and grades out as an above-average pitch per Stuff+.

Warren has also struggled in spring training. He has allowed four earned runs in four innings of work. The right-hander could find himself on waivers if the Mets need to make a last-minute 40-man roster addition. The one thing that may save him is the fact he still has a minor league option remaining. However, he’s not likely to make the Opening Day roster. The Mets’ bullpen is fairly set, and they could even favor a non-roster invitee over Warren, like Genesis Cabrera.
