2) Trade for Freddy Peralta without giving up Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong
The starting pitcher trade market seems to change its mind daily. One day, Joe Ryan is a trade candidate. Next, he’s off the table. The same pendulum is swinging similarly with Freddy Peralta. The Milwaukee Brewers haven’t outright said they’ll trade him (nor should they) with speculation aiming in both directions. It’ll be difficult for them to add much more to the team with him on the roster. And given his contract expires at the end of the year, the Brewers would be wise to swap him right now while the demand is hot.
An enticing offer does exist to acquire Peralta. However, if Stearns was to have it his way, the trade wouldn’t include Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong. Both are capable of contributing to the Mets this coming year. Including either in a deal for Peralta can have long-lasting ramifications with Peralta a possible one-and-done Mets player.
Good luck to the Mets in any attempt to acquire a starting pitcher upgrade without the inclusion of either of these two young top pitching prospects. Luckily for them, there are guys further down the ranking on the rise, too. Jack Wenninger, Jonathan Santucci, and more might be easier to part with because they aren’t quite in line to contribute as immediately as Sproat and/or Tong.
The immediacy in which both of these prospects can help out a big league club might make them a must in most trades. Having already gone the nostalgic route by signing Williams, we can assume Stearns would do the same with Peralta to become a co-ace alongside Nolan McLean.
