On the all-time list of games played for the New York Mets, Julio Teheran is tied with a whole bunch of guys at one. The longtime Atlanta Braves pitcher made one start for the 2024 Mets before getting DFA’d. Far more recently, Kevin Herget had his opportunity to pitch in relief for the team. He fared much better, surrendering one run in 2 innings of work. It came in an 8-3 Mets win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, making him an easily forgettable member of this 2025 season—unless of course he managed to make his way back.
Herget was here one day and practically gone the next. Late April and into early May was a huge roster shift period for the Mets trying to figure out their bullpen situation. The recent addition of Jose Castillo to the roster led to Herget getting DFA’d and rather than passing through waivers cleanly or finding a trade partner, the Mets lost him to the same Braves team Teheran represented for all of those years.
The #Braves today claimed RHP Kevin Herget off waivers from the New York Mets and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Kevin Herget is the latest former Mets pitcher to join the Braves
Herget is going to Triple-A where the Braves will hope he has more luck than some other former Mets they had on the farm this year. While ex-Met Rafael Montero struggles at the major league level, Atlanta has already cut a few other former Mets from their minor league depth.
Jake Marisnick recently had his walking papers issued after a lousy .098 batting average in 45 trips to the plate. Jake Diekman never actually threw a pitch for them before he parted ways with them following a lousy spring.
Not every former Mets player is failing badly with the Braves organization. Catcher James McCann went into Sunday batting over .300 in just under 100 plate appearances. He’s an outlier yet not necessarily doing enough to climb his way back to the majors after several seasons as a backup for the Baltimore Orioles.
The loss of Herget is easy to accept given how quickly he was in and out the door on the MLB roster. The team has yet to even hand innings off to some other names. A roster casualty likely due to his age and perhaps the thinking he could clear waivers or maybe just that they didn’t mind losing him, he’s one of 8 pitchers to appear in only one game for the team this season. All but Ty Adcock were first-time Mets upon making their appearance. As soon as Castillo, the player who replaced Herget on the 40-man roster debuts, we’ll have a ninth.
