Welcome to December where the weather is more brutal, the holiday spirits are more festive, and the MLB offseason begins to take flight. The New York Mets had a quiet albeit productive month of November. They said “goodbye” to some players while adding others.
Before a yule log gets tossed the fire to light up the MLB hot stove in full force, let’s look back at who they brought in and who they let go.
Mets waiver claims
The Mets added infielder Luis De Los Santos and pitcher Kevin Herget off of waivers on November 4. Each has minor league options which will improve their chances of sticking around.
Mets trades
Only one trade was made and it was a pretty significant one. Jose Siri was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitcher Eric Ore. Siri will be in the mix to play a whole lot of center field for the Mets in the coming season, if not starting there more regularly than anyone else.
Mets free agent signings
There has been a lot of activity on the free agent front. Only Justin Hagenman, on a split contract, has what technically qualifies as a major league deal. The idea of a split contract has become a little more commonplace and makes complete sense. He’ll receive a different salary in the minors versus what he could get while playing in the majors.
Minor league signings have been plentiful. Pitchers Rico Garcia and Alex Carrillo were signed on back-to-back days in the middle of November. Later, came the signing of Hobie Harris. Infielder Donovan Walton and catcher Jakson Reetz were signed to add some minor league depth. Veteran outfielder Rafael Ortega was brought back on a minor league deal.
The Mets completed their activity by signing Joey Menses and Genesis Cabrera to minor league deals. Each of those additions seem likeliest to impact the major league roster in some capacity.
Mets roster subtractions
Along with a large number of free agents, there were some others who were either non-tendered, elected free agency on their own, or had options declined. Sean Manaea officially opted out of his deal while Phil Maton had the team turn down his option for 2025. Joey Lucchesi, Matt Gage, and DJ Stewart all elected free agency.
More recently, the Mets non-tendered Alex Ramirez, Alex Young, and Grant Hartwig.
Slept through the slow offseason so far waiting for Juan Soto to make a decision? You probably recognize a couple of these names the Mets have added. Not to worry. December is traditionally the month when a lot more happens.
