3 members of the NY Mets roster who shouldn’t overvalued as the trade deadline nears

The Mets shouldn't rely on these three players to be a solution.

3) Jesse Winker

Fresh off the IL, the Mets shouldn’t count on Jesse Winker to be the middle of the order bat they were missing. Before his injury, Winker was batting .239/.321/.418 with 5 doubles and a home run in 78 plate appearances. The totals aren’t so far off from what he gave them last year in 129 tries. Winker was just a .243/.318/.365 hitter with 3 regular season dingers.

This is a player who batted only .219 in 2022 and followed it up with a .199 average and a single long ball in 2023, albeit in 197 plate appearances. A poor defender and likely limited to only facing right-handed pitchers, the Mets can’t be married to the idea of Winker being the best protection they can give Pete Alonso.

Winker would need to go through a massive slump to become a guy the Mets would actually release before the trade deadline or at all in 2025. More likely, any sort of demotion he faces comes in the form of being used against inferior right-handed pitchers where he should thrive.

The planned platoon of Marte and Winker at the DH spot was smart in theory with only a little over a month of actually getting to experience it. Winker doesn’t need to pack his bags or go anywhere. What the Mets need to do is be honest about what they have and where they can possibly add. Winker isn’t getting paid enough to get force-fed into the lineup. There’s also nothing wrong with him sliding down the lineup in favor of a trade deadline addition.
