2) Cedric Mullins

Cedric Mullins still makes sense for the Mets even if he isn’t having a great year. He’s essentially a more steady Jose Siri with lesser but still good enough defensive abilities. Power is still present in his bat which is something they haven’t been able to squeeze out of Tyrone Taylor at all this season.

The lefty swinger has oddly done superbly well against fellow southpaws. The .866 OPS against them makes him less likely to fit in with the Mets as a platoon player and more as a nearly-everyday choice in center field. There is fallout to adding him. It pushes Jeff McNeil to second base more regularly. Then comes the debate as to whether it’s Brett Baty or Ronny Mauricio at third base. The easy fix is to have a little more rest for some guys. This includes DH duties for Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto. McNeil can be the corner outfield replacement.

There have been recent games where it didn’t look like a bat was so necessary for the Mets. Then they go out and do nothing at the plate. It wasn’t only Wednesday’s game either. Their whole series against the San Diego Padres included very little offense. Outside of the Mark Vientos grand slam, they looked meager.

Mullins’ trade value is low for a couple of reasons. Capable of stealing bases and popping home runs, he’d be a satisfying upgrade as long as it doesn’t cost the Mets too much.
