3) A relief pitcher with minor league options
There could still be another relief pitcher on the way for the Mets even if it isn’t anyone with a high profile. In fact, you can probably count on David Stearns familiarizing himself with multiple pitchers in Triple-A. Last year’s deal for Tyler Zuber with the Rays is something nobody could’ve predicted. Something on that scale would be appropriate rather than continuing with some of the same veteran journeymen we’ve already seen.
Acquiring one of these players would come at a reasonable cost. Look for guys with a minor league option beyond just this season like Zuber had in 2024. It might be someone outperforming his track record or maybe it’s someone the scouts view needs a change.
Good luck guessing which pitcher this is. Someone Rule 5 Draft eligible at the end of the year might even make sense. A player like Shane Smith, who was taken first overall in last year’s Rule 5 Draft by the Chicago White Sox via the Milwaukee Brewers, is an example of someone the latter probably should’ve traded. Ironically an undrafted free agent signing by Stearns from back in 2021, it’s those lesser known options who’d be a fine fit for the Mets to round out their depth. It may even be a guy we don’t see take the field at all this year. Never forget how Max Kranick was with the organization for all of 2024 but never pitched in the majors. A waiver claim but a non-major league nonetheless, put this trade possibility high on your radar today.
