4) Sandy Alcantara or any starting pitcher for that matter
Do the Mets need another starting pitcher? Definitely. How can they make it work? Figure out that rubix cube first, buddy.
By the time it all becomes official with the roster, the Mets won’t have room on their big league roster for a sixth starting pitcher. Their bullpen is stacked with non-optional choices other than Reed Garrett. He may end up as a sacrifice once in August just to make things work.
Moving Clay Holmes to the bullpen feels sensible. It’s a tough trigger to pull this late in the year when they’ve committed so much and would need to find space for him in there as well.
The price on relief pitchers has been predictably high. We haven’t seen the movement of too many significant starting pitchers with the Arizona Diamondbacks set to sell a couple. There’s also Sandy Alcantara who, despite a miserable season, should fetch the Miami Marlins something of value. Otherwise, what are they doing selling him at a low?
If the Mets were going to add a starting pitcher, they probably would have done so rather than pick up Tyler Rogers or Ryan Helsley with a plan of moving Holmes into a relief role. They made their choice.
