NY Mets radio broadcast trio shares hilarious reaction to Awful Announcing ranking

Awful Announcing isn’t all about apologies right before a Nick Castellanos home run. It has developed into a more niche place for all things about broadcasting sports. An annual event they do is to rank television and radio broadcasts in Major League Baseball. The New York Mets tend to do pretty well.

This year, the Mets radio team finished fifth. They made no headway from last year’s ranking. It’s like stepping on the scale on December 1 and again on January 1 and not seeing your weight go up or down.

The radio booth didn’t waste much time reacting. Howie Rose, weeks away from his last broadcast, shared a hilarious reaction video starring himself, Keith Raad, and Pat McCarthy.

The real test for the Mets broadcast comes next year when there is no Howie Rose

The dynamic between Rose and Raad works well because it’s the old man vs. the young one. Rose knows how to self-deprecate. He has evolved well over the years and with videos like this, we’re reminded of how in-tune he remains even if he doesn’t always get screen time.

Rose is wrapping up his broadcasting career with appearances coming in future Mets games as the master of ceremony and perhaps even a few other events here and there. As for working an 81-game home schedule, that’s not happening. It’ll be a new age on the AM dial (or the app) featuring Raad, McCarthy, and maybe a new voice in there somewhere.

In early August, beat writer Laura Albanese stepped into the booth to fill in for Howie while the team was in Cleveland. The notable difference between the dynamic of having her and Raad vs. Raad and McCarthy was the diversity. Raad and McCarthy are difficult to differentiate. They’re around the same age, sound similar, and don’t have a unique enough path to the booth. A beat writer has a completely different perspective on things much like an ex-player would.

What has helped make Mets television broadcasts so great is the dynamic of having two former fan-favorites in the booth alongside Gary Cohen. Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling are unmatched and finding a replacement for both in the future will be difficult. It’s already looking like Daniel Murphy will be the first. The end result is probably fewer voices altogether with a two-man booth and alternatives rather than three microphones at a time.

Rose’s reaction in the video was a hilarious one-take with Raad and McCarthy unable to hold in their laughter. Angry Howie is some of the best. And if you haven’t tuned into too many games on the radio this year, be sure to check it out one last time before the Mets play their final home game on September 20th.

Far and away the worst kind of season to end a career on, we can only hope Howie sticks around on social media regularly to chime in on the Mets and pop up with something funny every once in a while. A regular poster on social media, Rose’s retirement isn’t a goodbye forever.
