2) Jonah Tong
One of the great finds in the draft by the Mets in recent years, Jonah Tong has absolutely exploded as one of the most exciting prospects in the system. A 7th round selection in 2022, he’s in the stretch run of his second straight monstrous season on the mound. Trading him is completely off the table.
Tong is 7-4 with a 1.71 ERA in Double-A. Averaging 14.1 K/9 in his 84 frames thus far, he is overdue for a promotion to Triple-A where he’d have a chance to face a different blend of minor leaguers, such as guys with MLB experience.
As unhittable as it gets, his 4.2 hits per 9 is practically an exact match for the 4 walks per 9. It’s not unwise to go up to the plate hoping for a walk. For most hitters, it’s your best bet at getting on base.
No pitcher representing the Mets in the minors or majors better represents the organization’s ability to get the most out of an arm. Whether it’s through coaching, the pitching lab, or his own natural born abilities, Tong is exceeding expectations and becoming one of the best at his position in the game on the minor league front.
Now and in the immediate future, Tong is off the table in all trade negotiations. At the absolute worst, he seems destined to be a powerful high-leverage reliever.
What could make Jonah Tong expendable in the future: Really, nothing. They could use an exceptional reliever.
