If you’re going to get caught having an affair, you best not do it during the slowest sports week in America. All-Star week includes multiple days where none of the four major sports play any games. It’s a good time to take a break from the New York Mets and maybe attend a Coldplay concert; just be sure to do it with the person you’re married to.
Andy Byron won’t be able to escape the memes for a little while longer because baseball fans had more than enough time to dig up all of the dirt on him this past week. We also had a chance to pause on the sport and consider anything and everything that’ll go into this year’s MLB trade deadline.
Buyers again this year, many of the additions for the Mets are obvious. What about the players they should or shouldn’t give up? Hands off these three, ranking from the least important to keep to the most.
3) Jett Williams
The most exciting Mets position player prospect they have, Jett Williams has a special kind of versatility that can have him falling into multiple roles when he does reach the major leagues. An undersized middle infielder and center fielder, his electric 2023 season helped him climb up the organization’s prospect rankings and become the most important minor leaguer they have. Some pitchers have caught up or surpassed him.
In his first full year in Double-A, Williams has hit .291/.399/.498 as of the start of the day on Saturday. His 8 home runs are trounced by his 25 doubles, showcasing some level of gap power. Surely, with his blazing speed which includes 27 stolen bases in 32 attempts, a few of those two-base hits would have been singles for the average player.
There are some holes in Williams’ game. He strikes out too often, fanning 75 times in 79 games this season. The power might not grow a whole lot. His size can take a part of the responsibility as he doesn’t look like the next cleanup hitter of the Mets. That’s not a problem. We’ll gladly accept him as a speedy second baseman or center fielder hitting at the top of the order during the peak of his career.
What could make Jett Williams expendable in the future: The Mets adding a long-term center field solution.
